What is Reiki? (pronounced ray key)

The practice of reiki is an ancient method of healing, rediscovered and developed by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan in the late 1800's. Reiki's natural healing energy works on every level, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually to rebalance energy flow and promote the body's regenerative self-healing ability.

The Japanese word 'reiki' means 'Universal Energy'. Eastern medicine has always worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being, known as 'ki' in Japan, 'chi' in China and 'prana' in India.

There is no belief system attached to reiki, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed. It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that can be used by all ages for any condition.

What happens at a reiki treatment?

After an initial consultation, the treatment is carried out with the client fully clothed and lying on a treatment couch (or sitting if it is more comfortable). The practitioner places their hands gently in a series of positions on or above the body. The hands sense and then direct energy to wherever the client needs it most. This then starts to enhance and support the persons own ability to heal itself.

Reiki can be felt as a flow of energy, warmth, mild tingling or coolness and some people see colours whilst receiving a treatment.

After the treatment the client generally feels very relaxed, it is also possible to feel cold and light-headed so it is important not to rush around straight after. Some people find that just one session is all that is required, however an initial course of three treatments is recommended at weekly intervals to get the most benefit. After this period, a treatment plan will be decided between the client and the practitioner, depending on progress made.

Reiki does not take the place of Western medicine. It is strongly advised that a person consult their GP for an acute condition and problems of an urgent concern. Reiki can safely be used in combination with orthodox medical care and other complementary therapies. It is a complementary therapy and should be used as a way to become and remain healthy.

A brief history of reiki

It is believed that rieki has been around for thousands of years, possibly in Tibet, but over time we lost our natural ability to use it. In the late 1800's it was rediscovered and revived by Dr Mikao Usui, who was the head of the Christian University of Japan. During Dr Usui's lectures his students asked him to explain and demonstrate this healing method. Thus began a 10 year quest to rediscover the skill.

After finding some ancient sandskrit formulas and symbols in old Buddhist sutras, Dr Usui thought he had found the key to this healing practice. He travelled to Mount Kurayama and it was there that he discovered how to use it for self healing and the healing of others.

Dr Usui devoted the rest of his life to healing others and passed on the knowledge before he died in 1930. Reiki came to the west via Mrs Takata who taught inHawaii after training with Dr Usui's successor, Dr Hayashi. The knowledge has now spread worldwide.
